Australian Shepherds are a very friendly, loyal, and intelligent dog breed. They are much like their cousin, the german shepherd. The name may confuse you, but australian shepherds, also known as"Aussies" , originate from western USA. They were bred to help men herd their sheep. They are very loyal to their family, and need to be insight of them, or will suffer depression. The australian shepherd has many colors and designs. Their many colors are the following: Red Tricolor, Black Tricolor, Red Merle, Blue Merle. They are very energetic dogs, and require daily exercise, just like the german shepherd. Although the german shepherd shares many things with the australian shepherd, they differ in many things as well. The german shepherd is much larger than the australian shepherd, and weighs less as well. The average height of an australian shepherd is 18 inches to 21 inches from foot to shoulders, and the height of german shepherds is 22 inches to 24 inches. The breed also can be bred to be mini. This breed needs constant love and attention, and needs to be with their family. These dogs need to be around their master, and can't not be around them. These dogs work well as outdoor dogs, but tend to bark and howl when left alone outside. Their small size makes them a great indoor dog, and if an indoor dog learn to be mellow, gain good behavior, and tend to calm down. This breed is the perfect compromise if you want a german shepherd, but can't have the large size. If you are considering fostering or adopting a dog, the australian shepherd would be a great choice!
